2010 is the United Nations International Year of
Biodiversity, yet landscapes and seascapes are under
continuing pressure resulting in the loss of habitat and
ultimately species loss.
The reduction in species in the Lower Lakes and Coorong
as a result of the ongoing drought, over-allocation and the lack
of environmental flows to the region illustrate this point.
This seminar will explore the law’s adequacy in managing biodiversity
and will consider the future status of biodiversity through concepts
such as bioprospecting, legal rights for plants and animals and law
reform options.
Prominent legal, government and community speakers
will provide an overview
of the legislative and other responses to this most important issue.
